COMMUNITY SERVICE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO ASSIST IN RED CROSS
DRIVES
Members are needed to assist in
the Red Cross blood drive at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Streetsboro. Volunteers
help by serving snacks to blood donors, and keeping an eye on them while they recover from their donation, and making sure
they are strong enough to leave the site. Please contact Judith
Morgan, Community Service Chair, at 330-653-8174 if you can help. Judy is a new member of PCRTA who has jumped right in and taken an active role in leadership. Why not
ask her if you can help her?

New Proctor Training
On Tuesday, April 17, Josie Kreiger, Bob and Kathy Latimer, Sur Matuk and JoAnn Stikes completed
the Orientation for Proctors for tests given at the NEOUCOM College of Medicine and Pharmacy. This project
helps to fund the scholarship grants which PCRTA awards to selected Portage County graduating seniors who plan to enter the
field of education.
Junior Achievement
The lessons were taught by senior students in Mrs. Theresa Brugler’s Marketing Education program with assistance when needed by retired teachers.
The Field High School students used JA-prepared materials and lesson plans, added their unique personalities and
backgrounds, and created many exciting classroom experiences. One high school
student, in response to a question, explained the Federal economic stimulus package in a clear and concise manner.
The elementary students discussed the bailout, our new President, and, of course, the First Family’s new dog. The JA lessons are correlated with the Ohio academic content standards. Classroom
teachers were pleased that the lessons enhanced their lesson plans at each grade level. The all-day, in-school
mastering money project left the students with much to share with their parents. They may even have mentioned
mobbing a very tall senior and bringing him to the ground during recess. The high school seniors gained
leadership experience and confidence. And the retired teachers enjoyed a day back in the classroom.
May 8th was the National Day of Service. Many
Portage County retired teachers worked at the Portage
County Clothing Center. The morning crew included
Saroj Sutaria, Adele Fussner, Darlene Fetterhoff, Edith Scott, Jeanette Able, Carol MacLean, Norm Park, Bob
Dunn, and Dave Gynn.

PCRTA Community
Service chair, Adele Fussner, was surprised at the May meeting when she was awarded a certificate and a pin as an AARP/National Retired Teachers Volunteer of the Year. Adele does such an outstanding
job of leading our members in community service activities, that someone called recently and asked if we were the "Portage
County Retired Teachers Volunteer Association." |
Once again our members have been busy again working on
various activities to help other people in our county. Thanks to volunteers
Rosemary Hostler and Mary Jane Brannon who helped with the Red Cross Blood Drive
at Joan of Arc Church in Streetsboro on October 14, 2008. Saturday,
October 25, 2008, was Make a Difference Day. PCRTA cooperated with
many other county groups to collect canned and boxed foods for food banks and places which provide free meals for those in
need. Thanks to these volunteers who gave their time: Mary Jane Brannon, Nancy Duquette, Adele Fussner, Dave and
Pat Gynn, Rosemary Hostler, Saroj Sutaria, and Ruth Weigand.
