November 16th Luncheon at the Kent American Legion Hall at 11:30
Lynn Poulton to Offer Decluttering Hints
Are you overwhelmed by stuff in your house? Is it time to right size your home? Would
you prefer to make decisions about your possessions rather than leaving it to your kids to decide?
Get your questions answered about who will buy or accept your no longer wanted/needed items. Get the 10 tips for staying organized, the three steps to getting started and leave with the most useful questions to ask yourself when making decisions.
Our guest speaker in November is Lynne Poulton, a Certified Professional Organizer and owner of Wholly Organized!® LLC. She assists people of all ages to de-clutter, downsize, set up systems and maintain organization.
Lynne is a Licensed Social Worker and, prior to starting her business in 2012, she spent 14 years working for a non-profit social service agency. This is a meeting you do will not want to miss.
Community Service: Please bring to the November luncheon non-perishable items and paper products for the Center of hope
TUBA FOURS TO PERFORM FOR OUR DECEMBER LUNCHEON AT THE AMERICAN LEGION DECEMBER 14, 2017, AT 11:30 A.M.
You will not want to miss our December Christmas Luncheon. We are going to enjoy a musical group called the Tuba Fours. They are a group of low brass players who could not get enough of Tuba Christmas. In fact, two of the members perform five or six concerts each season in various states.
Since they all play together in the Metro Parks Ensemble (Summit County), they have turned four-part Tuba music into a year- round “obsession.” The highlight of this year was taking fourth prize in the Portage Lakes 4th of July boat parade. Four of the members were public school or college-level educators.
Community Service: Please bring to the December luncheon children’s hats, gloves, scarves or outerwear for the winter.
MEMBERSHIP UPDATE – PLEASE RETURN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
You will find a membership update above. All members should complete this short form and return it as soon as possible. Members change addresses, phone numbers and email addresses often. We need to know your current status. We also value your opinion about our newsletter, luncheons meetings, web site, social activities and legislative activities.
Membership October – December 2017 by Judy Hendershot
We welcome new members Linda Roberts and MaryAnn Beman-Nething. They joined us at our September luncheon and were introduced to our members in attendance.
Linda has taught in several states during her career and retired under the California system.
MaryAnn retired from Warren City Schools in 2017. Both Linda and MaryAnn bring a new energy to our association.
We will be setting up our PCRTA closed Face Book group site this month. If you have a working email address and use Facebook as well, we will be contacting you with an invitation to join our group. We will use our secure Facebook group site to disseminate information and to help all members to stay connected between meetings and activities.
Additionally, this site will be a way to advertise PCRTA and ORTA and hopefully encourage other retired teachers who are not members to join.
Your continued membership gives us a strong voice. Thank you.
Time to Renew Membership! by Dave Gynn
When you see the big yellow school bus it is a reminder that you are retired, you won’t go to school today and you need to pay your dues. Now is the time to renew your membership for 2018.
Look at the address label on your newsletter. If it says “Life” – Thank you for your loyalty and congratulations on being a wise investor. If it says “2017” – Your dues for 2018 are now due. Membership dues are collected between July and December for the following year. If the label says “2018” – Your dues are paid for next year. The code S stands for state (ORTA); the code P stands for Portage (PCRTA).
If you receive your newsletter via email, check with the treasurer (330-678-8423) about your membership status. Annual dues are $40 – $30 for ORTA and $10 for PCRTA. Send a check made payable to PCRTA. All dues should be sent to Dave Gynn, 4210 Lancaster Ln, Kent, OH 44240. Your state dues will be forwarded to ORTA. Your annual dues can be converted to a life membership. PCRTA life membership is $150. ORTA is $500 and can be made in payments.
NEW PCRTA MEMBERS
Welcome to Sandy Halem of Kent, who is currently the Enrichment Coordinator for Family and Community Services in Ravenna. She is asking for volunteers to read to kids. Call Sandy at 330-620-2756. PCRTA also welcomes Bonnie Oliver from Garrettsville, who retired from Maplewood in 2009.
IGNORE POP5 COMMUNICATIONS by Dave Gynn
They’re at it again. POP5 is again soliciting members from the five state retirement systems in Ohio. Don’t be confused or misled by their letters, emails or website. Their communications contain inaccurate information. Their organization is not endorsed by any of the five retirement systems or their related retiree groups (retired teachers, school employees, public employees, highway patrol, police and fire retirees).
ORTA has been and will continue to be the voice of retired educators. ORTA continually works with STRS and with the legislature to protect and preserve the pensions of all retired educators. The defined benefit pension system is critical to a secure retirement, and all educators should value the program. Do not let POP5, a rogue organization, speak for you.
Emmas Tuel, not pictured, was in a 4-H competition of the same day.
Congratulations to all the winners!
NEOMED contributes significantly to the PCRTA Future Teachers Scholarship Fund. This year seven Portage high school graduates who intend to major in education will each receive a $1,500 scholarship. Retired teachers or community members interested in participating in this important project should call Edith Scott at 330-297-1812
